How to choose PTFE and FEP

PTFE: Polytetrafluoroethylene is a kind of high-temperature chemical material containing polytetrafluoroethylene. Widely used in packaging, electronic and electrical, chemical energy, and corrosion-resistant materials.

FEP: polyperfluoroethylpropylene. FEP is formed by the copolymerization of polytetrafluoroethylene and hexafluoropropylene. FEP has similar characteristics to PTEE and good processing technology of thermoplastic, so it has become an important material to replace polytetrafluoroethylene. FEP is widely used in the production of wires and cables, such as transmission lines of electronic equipment used under high temperatures and high frequency, connecting lines inside electronic computers, aerospace wires, installation lines for other special purposes, oil mine logging cables, winding lines of submersible motors, outgoing lines of micro motors, etc.

Difference between PTFE and FEP

  1. PTFE nonstick coating can be used continuously at 260 ℃, with the highest service temperature of 290-320 ℃, extremely low friction coefficient, good wear resistance, and excellent chemical stability. It can't be injection molded. It can be extruded or painted.
  2. FEP nonstick coating melts and flows during baking to form a nonporous film. It has excellent chemical stability and excellent nonstick characteristics. The maximum service temperature is 200 ℃ and the melting point is 270 ℃. It can be injected and extruded.

Therefore, PTFE material is much more practical than FEP. The reason is very simple because of its characteristics: polytetrafluoroethylene PTFE and FEP have strong corrosion resistance and chemical stability. The physical properties of PTFE are harder than FEP, and the temperature resistance is higher than FEP, by about 200 degrees. However, PTFE is difficult to form, so many parts with complex shapes are made of FEP.

In terms of color: PTFE is white and opaque, FEP is gray-white and translucent, and the related link PVDF is polyvinylidene fluoride, which is a little worse than PTFE and FEP. It has low-temperature resistance and slightly poor corrosion resistance, and the price is much cheaper than PTFE and FEP.

PTFE has better temperature resistance, anti-corrosion performance, and anti-sticking performance than FEP. PTFE can resist the corrosion of any medium, and its color is absolutely white. It is generally used for fluorine-lined pipes, valves, seals, bears, etc. FEP is polytetrafluoroethylene propylene, and its color is transparent. Its corrosion resistance is equivalent to that of PTFE. It is generally used for fluorine-lined pumps or perfluorinated pumps. PTFE + FEP = F50, that is, fluoroplastic alloy, The material is also often used in fluoroplastic pumps. When they are used together, they can increase wear resistance.

In the tape market, PTFE film is generally coated with silica gel to form a pure Teflon film tape with high-temperature resistance. The color is generally gray and the thickness is generally 0.08mm/0.13mm/0.25mm. It is widely used in electronic, electrical, cable, and other fields. Relatively speaking, FEP film is less coated with glue.
